The Endless Charm of Vintage Fabrics
Children of the Discordance
A New Life for Old Bandanas
The world of textiles is a deep one.
In particular, vintage fabrics have an endless charm whereby the more you learn about them, the more that the textures of the materials make you feel nostalgic, the expression of weaves and patterns that are difficult to reproduce in modern times, and the cultural background implied by the various motifs draw one into this world.
“Children of the Discordance” (COTD) uses many of these vintage fabrics in its creations. Bandanas, in particular, are ordered and reused through unique routes from seven countries around the world, including the United States, Pakistan, Thailand and the Netherlands. In the past, the company has purchased about 40,000 bandanas a year, including dead stock and rare ones, and it uses the ones that are in good condition not only to make shirts and outerwear, but also shoes, bags and more.
This approach can be summarized in their brand philosophy of “one and only,” where products never have the same look. Each item is created using rare materials, deconstructed and reconstructed, and transformed into a patchwork that becomes a one-of-a-kind garment that can almost be called a piece of art.
“What’s interesting about vintage fabrics is that you can feel a strength that cannot be seen with the naked eye,” explains the designer. “The unique value and appeal of vintage fabrics is that no two fabrics are the same”. A unique depth that develops over time, along with colors and patterns that express feelings similar to people’s prayers, are used in a way that also changes depending on the time and place. There are probably many people who are fascinated by the potential of bandanas. Bandanas have told various stories over time and their charm, which captures the imagination of the viewer, will never fade.
